AWKA, NIGERIA – A new wave of empowerment is set to sweep through Anambra State as hundreds of women have been shortlisted for a groundbreaking skills program designed to train them in traditionally male-dominated fields.

The selection phase for the first batch of the “Anambra Skilled Ladies Training Program” is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at the Government House’s Light House Banquet Hall in Awka.

The initiative, championed by the wife of the State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, through her “Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative,” aims to shatter professional stereotypes and equip women with high-demand technical skills.

According to the Anambra’s First Lady, the program’s core mission is to “empower women to do the things men in the society do,” encouraging economic independence and gender equality.

Shortlisted candidates will be vying for spots in rigorous training modules including electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, solar power installation, and professional painting, among others.

Organizers have clarified that this is just the first batch of a multi-phase program. Women who applied but were not selected this round are encouraged to remain expectant, as subsequent lists will be released in the near future.

In a direct message to the successful first-batch candidates, the First Lady’s vision is to empower the female youth and women of Anambra. A strong appeal was made to the participants, urging them to “make the best use of this opportunity and endeavor not to sell any equipment given to them.”

The program is being launched on the foundational belief that empowering women has a ripple effect on the entire community, summed up by the initiative’s motto: “When you empower a woman, you empower a nation!”
