In a significant event held at Holy Trinity Church Nibo, Anambra State, the 38th Awka Diocesan Women’s Conference of the Mothers Union of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Province of the Niger, Diocese of Awka, witnessed the presence of Mrs. Nonye Soludo, the wife of Anambra State Governor.
Represented by Dr. Afam Obidike, the State Coordinator of Healthy Living With Nonye Soludo and Commissioner for Health, Mrs. Soludo addressed the gathering on the importance of healthy living.
During her speech, she highlighted the current cholera epidemic in the state, attributing it to poor environmental hygiene. She emphasized that cholera is caused by bacteria and is entirely preventable through simple practices such as washing hands with soap and water before handling food. She also stressed the importance of drinking clean, treated water to prevent the disease.
Mrs. Soludo also spoke about the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, a key initiative to combat cervical cancer among women. She mentioned that cervical screening and testing have been carried out on nearly 17,000 individuals, emphasizing that cervical cancer is preventable. She encouraged young women to take advantage of the free HPV vaccine available at primary health centers in the state, dispelling myths about its safety.
Additionally, Mrs. Soludo advocated for regular exercise, stating that every hour of exercise can prolong life by three hours. She also announced the launch of “The Healthy Living Overwatch,” a program aimed at combating the abuse of drug substances among the youth, which she identified as a silent killer. The President of the Mothers Union, Women’s Guild, Girls Guild & YWF Diocese of Awka and Province of the Niger, Dr. Mrs. Martha Chioma Ibezim commended Mrs. Soludo for her participation and for promoting healthy living among the attendees of the women’s conference.
