First Lady, Nonye Soludo, Honoured with Doctorate as COOU Shines at Historic 25th Anniversary Convocation

IGBARIAM, ANAMBRA – In a dazzling celebration of academic excellence, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) marked its 25th anniversary with its 11th to 15th combined convocation ceremonies, a landmark event that drew dignitaries, alumni, and students to its vibrant Igbariam campus.

The spotlight shone brightly on Mrs. Nonye Soludo, wife of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, who was awarded an honorary doctorate in food science and nutrition for her trailblazing work in promoting healthy living.

Governor Soludo, in a stirring address, hailed COOU’s transformation under his administration, crediting partnerships with private sectors and local communities for driving progress.

“This university is unrecognizable from what it once was,” he declared, while paying tribute to the late Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju, COOU’s founder, urging the institution to immortalize his legacy. “Education is the bridge to the future,” Soludo emphasized, celebrating contributions from predecessors and education advocates.

Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Kate Omenugha lauded COOU’s uninterrupted academic calendar, an evidence to its stability. “We’re combining five years of success in this celebration,” she said, expressing gratitude to Governor Soludo for his support and openness to partnerships to elevate educational opportunities.

Pro-Chancellor Prof. Chidi Odinkalu called for communal engagement, describing the university as a space where “disagreement thrives in cordiality.” He urged stakeholders to join in shaping COOU’s vibrant future.

Meanwhile, Commissioner for Education Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh praised the governor’s relentless focus on education as a cornerstone of progress.

The ceremony’s emotional peak came as Mrs. Nonye Soludo accepted her honorary degree, earning applause for her “Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo” initiative. She expressed heartfelt gratitude to the university and supporters, cementing her role as a champion of nutrition and wellness.

The event, attended by luminaries including Deputy Governor Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, Speaker Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, and traditional rulers, highlighted COOU’s rising prominence as a model of academic and community excellence.
