AWKA, ANAMBRA – Dr. Mrs. Nonye Soludo, the wife of the Anambra State Governor, called on women across the state to champion child health, nutritional discipline, and traditional family harmony during the third annual Health August Meeting Summit held in Awka on Thursday.
Addressing a large assembly of women leaders, government officials, and representatives from all 21 local government areas, Mrs. Soludo delivered a passionate speech covering critical health and social issues.
The First Lady strongly advocated for exclusive breastfeeding, calling it “the best gift you can give to your baby.” She cautioned against the use of artificial infant formulas, which she claimed could hinder a child’s brain development. “Breast milk is the natural food God has created for us,” she stated, emphasizing its nutritional completeness.
On public health, Mrs. Soludo lamented the prevalence of vaccine hesitancy, urging mothers to ensure their children receive all required immunizations to prevent diseases like measles. “Please let them take it for their health benefit,” she pleaded.
Tackling the issue of gender-based violence, she advised women to cultivate patience and self-control. “We women should stop the habit of nagging and always learn when to talk,” Mrs. Soludo remarked, using the analogy that while the man is the “head” of the family, the woman is the “neck” that guides him.
The governor’s wife also stressed the need for a return to communal child-rearing and healthier eating habits. “Ninety percent of sickness is as a result of what we eat,” she said, promoting her “Nonye healthy living pap” initiative for malnourished children and advocating for backyard gardens.
As a practical step, Mrs. Soludo distributed free seedlings of various vegetables and fruits including free medical check-ups to the women. The summit also featured presentations from health professionals and a drama performance on healthy living.
